Gugyeongyeomong (舊景如夢): Scenery Lost in a Dream

Park Junwoo’s paintings draw upon the compositional conventions of traditional East Asian landscape painting, yet they do not depict any specific place that exists in reality.

Mountains, rocks, and pine trees are removed from their actual geographical contexts, then selected and rearranged according to the artist’s memories and sensibility.

The resulting landscapes appear more harmonious and complete than nature as it is encountered in the real world. This idealization, however, is not an attempt to turn away from reality. Rather, it is a means of recalling within painting an image of nature in its wholeness—something increasingly difficult to encounter today—and of expressing the hope that such a world may continue to endure.

The unpainted space is a field of potentiality. For Artist, absence becomes a source of imagination, giving form to a topography of what is missing.

At the center of the composition, the pine tree stands firmly amid rugged rocks and mountainous terrain, retaining its vital force.

Reconstructed as larger and more abundant in memory and imagination than it might appear in an actual landscape, the tree bears witness to a natural world once encountered while also becoming an image of life that the artist hopes will endure beyond the limits of present reality. While the surrounding mountains and rocks evoke the long duration and accumulated memory of nature, the pine tree symbolizes the will and continuity of life that persist through time.

Accordingly, Gugyeongyeomong (舊景如夢): Scenery Lost in a Dream is not an attempt to reconstruct a particular place that has disappeared.

Through the forms of traditional landscape painting and a contemporary sensibility, Park reconfigures an archetypal image of nature that has gradually faded within memory.

His landscapes are not faithful records of reality, but idealized spaces in which memories of the past, emotions of the present, and hopes for the future converge.

Within them reside both a longing for the nature once encountered and a wish for life in its wholeness to endure into the future.
